Approximately 2012-2013. The airport was last depicted on aeronautical charts in 2009 and was confirmed closed by 2013. The closure strongly coincides with the death of its owner in late 2012.
The airport was a private-use airfield owned and operated by Robert E. Grismore. Its closure is directly attributed to the passing of Mr. Grismore (1923-2012), a licensed pilot and lifelong farmer. It is very common for small, private airfields to cease operations after the owner's death, as the family often has no means or desire to continue maintaining the facility, and the land is repurposed.
The site is permanently closed and has been fully converted back to agricultural use, consistent with the surrounding landscape. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the land where the turf runway was located is now a cultivated farm field. While some of the original buildings (likely hangars and sheds) are still standing on the property, they are now used for agricultural storage. All visual evidence of an active airfield has been erased.
Grismore Airport (at one time assigned the FAA identifier II88) was a classic example of a small, private general aviation airfield serving its owner and potentially the local flying community. It was operational from at least the 1970s. The airport featured a single turf runway, designated 15/33, with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. Its operations were limited to private recreational flying and personal air transportation. It did not support commercial, scheduled, or military operations and was a testament to the grassroots aviation culture in rural America.
None. There are no plans or prospects for Grismore Airport to reopen. The land is privately owned and has been integrated into the adjacent farmland. As a small, private strip that has been defunct for over a decade, there is no economic or logistical basis for its restoration as an aviation facility.
