Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2005. Historical satellite imagery shows the airport was intact through 2004. By May 2005, initial road grading for a new housing development had begun on the southern portion of the field, and by late 2006, the runway was mostly obliterated by homes under construction.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for residential real estate development. As the city of Cedar Falls expanded, the land became more valuable for housing than for its use as a private airfield, a common fate for many small airports located near growing urban areas.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. It is now a high-density residential housing development known as 'The Ridges'. The former runway and hangar area are now covered by streets such as Pinnacle Parkway, Ridge Point Drive, and numerous single-family homes. There are no remaining visible traces of the former airport.

Historical Significance

Lemons Airport (also identified by the FAA location identifier 8IA2) was a privately-owned, public-use airfield that served the general aviation community. It featured a single north-south turf runway (18/36) measuring approximately 2,640 feet in length. The airport was owned by Robert Lemons and included at least one T-hangar and other small buildings. For decades, it provided a base for local pilots, supporting recreational flying and private aircraft storage. It was a typical example of the small, family-owned airfields that were once common across the United States.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been fully converted to residential use, making any prospect of reopening as an airport impossible. The site is permanently occupied by a housing subdivision.
