Approximately November 2014. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the relocation and opening of the new Martin Army Community Hospital.
Military infrastructure replacement. The heliport was an integral part of the old Martin Army Community Hospital. When the hospital was replaced by a new, state-of-the-art facility at a different location on Fort Benning (now Fort Moore) in 2014, the old hospital complex, including this heliport, was rendered obsolete and subsequently decommissioned and demolished.
The site of the former heliport and the old Martin Army Community Hospital has been completely cleared. The hospital complex was demolished (a process completed around 2017-2018), and the land has been graded and re-landscaped. As of today, it is a large, open green space or field. There is no remaining infrastructure of the original heliport.
The heliport was named in honor of Specialist Fourth Class Joseph G. LaPointe Jr., a US Army combat medic who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in the Vietnam War. Its primary and vital role was to support the Martin Army Community Hospital by facilitating Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) flights. It handled the rapid aerial transport of critically ill and injured soldiers from training accidents on Fort Benning, a major US Army training installation, and other emergencies, directly to the hospital's trauma center. It was a crucial component of the base's emergency medical response infrastructure for decades.
None. There are no plans or prospects to reopen this heliport. Its function has been entirely and permanently replaced by the new, modern helipad located at the current Martin Army Community Hospital. The original site no longer exists as an aviation facility.
