Circa 1998-2002. The airport was last depicted on a 1994 aeronautical chart and was officially listed as closed by the FAA by 2002. A 2002 aerial photograph shows the runway marked with a 'CLOSED' symbol.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airport was a private field located in a rapidly growing suburban area south of Atlanta. The increasing value of the land for commercial development led to its sale and subsequent redevelopment, a common fate for many small, privately-owned airfields in expanding metropolitan areas.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as a former airfield. As of the early 2020s, the land where Bishops Airport once stood is now the location of the U.S. Soccer National Training Center, located at 1 Arthur Blank Family Blvd. The area is part of the larger 'Town at Trilith' development, adjacent to Trilith Studios (formerly Pinewood Atlanta Studios).
Bishops Airport, which had the FAA identifier GA96, was a private general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1973 and 1980 by its owner, W.H. Bishop. The airfield consisted of a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,400 feet long, designated as Runway 18/36. It served as a personal landing strip for its owner and likely a few other local pilots, representing a typical example of the small, private-use airfields that were once common throughout rural and suburban America before being displaced by development.
None. The site has been permanently and completely redeveloped for commercial use with high-value infrastructure. There are no plans or possibilities for it to ever be used as an airport again.
