Approximately April 1, 2014. The heliport ceased all operations concurrently with the closure of the old Paulding Memorial Hospital, as all services and staff were transferred to a new facility.
The heliport was closed because the hospital it served, Paulding Memorial Hospital, was permanently closed and replaced by the new, state-of-the-art Wellstar Paulding Hospital, which was built at a different location in Hiram, Georgia. The closure was a planned event as part of a strategic upgrade and modernization of healthcare facilities in the county, not the result of an accident, economic failure, or military conversion.
The original Paulding Memorial Hospital building and its associated heliport have been completely demolished (demolition began in late 2016). The site at 251 W Memorial Dr, Dallas, GA, has been redeveloped by Wellstar Health System. It is now the 'Wellstar Paulding Regional Health Park,' which houses a variety of outpatient services, including medical offices, an urgent care center, and other health-related facilities. The physical helipad no longer exists.
For decades, the Paulding Memorial Hospital Heliport was a vital piece of emergency medical infrastructure for Paulding County and the surrounding region. Its primary function was to support medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operations. The heliport allowed air ambulance services to rapidly transport trauma victims and critically ill patients (e.g., those suffering from heart attacks or strokes) directly to the hospital's emergency department. It also served as a crucial transfer point for stabilizing patients before flying them to larger, more specialized Level I trauma centers in the Atlanta area. Its existence significantly reduced transport times for critical patients, improving survival rates and medical outcomes.
There are zero prospects for reopening this heliport. The physical infrastructure was permanently removed during the site's redevelopment. All emergency and patient transfer helicopter operations for the area are now handled by the modern, active heliport at the new Wellstar Paulding Hospital (FAA Identifier: 3GE6), making the original site redundant.
