The airport was closed sometime between 1985 and 1994. The last known depiction of it on an aeronautical chart was in 1985, and it was absent from the 1994 chart.
Economic reasons, specifically land redevelopment. The privately-owned land was sold for industrial development, which is a common reason for the closure of small general aviation airfields located near growing commercial areas.
The site of the former airfield has been completely obliterated and redeveloped. A massive industrial facility, the Mohawk Industries Aladdin Plant (a large-scale carpet and flooring distribution center), was constructed on the property around 2005-2006. There are no remaining traces of the runway or any airport infrastructure.
Mercer Airfield was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was established between 1973 and 1981 and was owned by an individual named Mercer Hudson. The airfield featured a single unpaved, north/south turf runway (Runway 18/36) approximately 2,200 feet in length. Its operations were limited to private, personal, and recreational flying; it did not handle commercial or military traffic and held no major historical significance beyond serving the local aviation community.
None. The land has been permanently and extensively redeveloped for heavy industrial use, making any prospect of reopening as an airport impossible.
I used to stop at this field/museum back in '80's when driving to Chattanoga for training when working for EME.....lots for aircraft back then...really a shame to see it now...back then I could just wander around and take pics for hrs.....that seems to have been when the most a/c were there......does anybody have a complete list of all the a/c and the total inventory of the museum.....I remember several comm type military vans/trailers...I stopped there in about nov. of 2006......and I could have cried...that place had alot of potential...
