The airport was closed sometime between 1994 and 2004. It was still depicted as operational in a 1994 USGS aerial photo and listed in aviation directories in the early 1980s, but it was no longer shown on the 2004 Tallahassee Sectional Aeronautical Chart.
The specific reason for the closure is not publicly documented. As a private farm airstrip, the most probable cause was a private decision by the owner. This could be due to the owner ceasing flight activities, selling the property, the high cost of maintenance and insurance, or the owner passing away. There is no evidence to suggest closure was due to a major accident, economic failure (as it was not a public-use airport), or military conversion.
The site is currently part of a private rural property. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still clearly visible in satellite imagery as a long, grassy clearing. However, it is no longer maintained as an aviation surface and appears to be used as a pasture or mowed field. There are no airport markings, buildings, or infrastructure remaining that would indicate an active airfield.
Steep Head Farm Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its primary role was to serve the personal and possibly agricultural needs of its owner. First appearing on charts in 1973, it featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36. In the 1980s, it was owned by W. L. Miller and managed by M. L. Miller. The operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft for recreational or personal transportation purposes. Its significance was limited to the private use of its owners and was not a hub for commercial or significant public activity.
There are no known plans or public prospects for reopening Steep Head Farm Airport. Given that it has been closed for approximately two decades and the land is integrated into a private farm/residence, reopening is extremely unlikely. It would require the current landowner to have an interest in aviation and be willing to undertake the significant effort and expense to restore and potentially recertify the airstrip.
