Between 1981 and 1985. The airport was last depicted on the 1981 Miami Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1985 edition of the chart.
Urban encroachment and real estate development. The airport was situated in a location that experienced rapid suburban growth, particularly after the construction of Interstate 75. The value of the land for residential development far surpassed its value as a private airfield, leading to its sale and redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of the 'Laurel Lakes' gated residential community. The development is situated northeast of the intersection of Interstate 75 and Bee Ridge Road. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure.
Lowe's Airport, also known as Lowe's Field, was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. It appeared on aeronautical charts by 1968 and featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. The airport primarily served local private pilots for recreational flying and general aviation purposes. It is a representative example of the many small, private airstrips that were common throughout Florida before being displaced by widespread residential and commercial development. Its significance is local, marking a bygone era of aviation in the Sarasota area.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been irrevocably transformed into a high-density residential neighborhood, making any return to aviation use impossible.
