Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Circa September 2017

Reason for Closure

The seaplane base was an amenity of the Bonefish Resort. The resort sustained catastrophic damage from Hurricane Irma in September 2017, forcing its closure. The property was subsequently sold and completely redeveloped into the new Grassy Flats Resort & Beach Club. The seaplane operation was not part of the new business model and was not re-established.

Current Status

The site is now the location of the Grassy Flats Resort & Beach Club, a modern, upscale hotel. The original resort buildings were demolished and replaced. While the property remains on the waterfront with a boat basin and docks, it no longer functions as a seaplane base and there is no remaining aviation infrastructure. The resort's focus is on accommodations, dining, and other watersports like kiteboarding.

Historical Significance

The Flying Bonefish Seaplane Base was a private-use facility that catered to tourists and anglers staying at the adjacent Bonefish Resort. Its primary function was to provide chartered seaplane flights for sport fishing, particularly for bonefish, in the remote, shallow flats of the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park that were difficult to access by boat. It represented a classic and adventurous element of Florida Keys tourism, offering a unique and exclusive way to experience the region's world-class fishing grounds. Operations typically involved small floatplanes carrying a pilot and a few passengers.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or public prospects for reopening the seaplane base. The complete redevelopment of the property with a new business focus makes a return to aviation operations highly unlikely. Re-establishing a seaplane base would require new and complex permitting, significant investment, and alignment with the current resort's brand, none of which appear to be under consideration.
