Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately September 2009

Reason for Closure

The heliport's closure was a direct consequence of the permanent closure of the Cypress Gardens Adventure Park, which it served. The park ceased operations on September 23, 2009, due to economic reasons. When Merlin Entertainments purchased the site to redevelop it into Legoland Florida (which opened in 2011), the heliport facility was not retained and the land was repurposed for the new theme park's layout.

Current Status

The site of the former heliport has been fully integrated into the Legoland Florida Resort. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (27.989691, -81.693109) shows the area is now part of the theme park's entrance plaza, pathways, and parking infrastructure. There is no remaining physical evidence of a helipad or any associated aviation facilities. The land is used exclusively for theme park operations.

Historical Significance

The facility was a small, private heliport located on the grounds of the Cypress Gardens theme park. Its primary function was to support commercial sightseeing operations, offering helicopter tours to park visitors over the famous botanical gardens, the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes, and the park's attractions. It was not a public transportation hub and primarily served a tourism and recreational purpose. The identifier US-11239 is a non-standard code used by some third-party aviation databases and not an official FAA or ICAO designation, reflecting its private and minor operational scale.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening a heliport at this specific location. Legoland Florida and its parent company, Merlin Entertainments, have not announced any intention to restore aviation capabilities on-site. Helicopter tours of the park and surrounding area are offered by independent operators based at nearby airports, such as Winter Haven Regional Airport (KGIF), but not directly from the theme park grounds.
