Estimated between 1960 and 1962. The airfield was visible in a 1960 aerial photograph but was not listed in the 1962 AOPA Airport Directory and was not depicted on aeronautical charts from 1968 onwards.
The specific reason is not officially documented. As a small, private turf airfield, closure was most likely due to economic factors, the owner's decision to cease operations, or the sale of the land for other purposes. Small private fields often close when they are no longer financially viable or when the owner can no longer maintain them. Its proximity to the larger, public Arcadia Municipal Airport (KX06) may have also rendered it redundant.
The site of the former airport is now agricultural land, appearing to be used as a cattle pasture. On current satellite imagery, the faint, overgrown outline of the former north-south runway is still barely visible as a linear feature in the field. The land has not been developed for residential, commercial, or industrial use.
Ellsworth Field was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its primary feature was a single unpaved, north-south turf runway estimated to be around 2,000 feet long. It was characteristic of the many private airstrips built in the United States during the post-World War II aviation boom. Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft (like Piper Cubs or Cessna 150s) for recreational flying or personal transportation. It held no significant commercial or military importance and primarily served its private owner and possibly a small number of local pilots.
None. The airport has been officially closed and non-operational for approximately 60 years. The land has fully reverted to agricultural use, and there are no known plans or prospects for its reopening. The presence of the nearby, full-service Arcadia Municipal Airport makes the reactivation of Ellsworth Field economically unfeasible and unnecessary.
