Between 1979 and 1981. The airport was depicted on the 1979 Washington Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer shown on the 1981 edition of the same chart.
The primary reason for the closure was the sale and subsequent redevelopment of the land for residential and recreational use. The value of the land for real estate development in the growing Middletown area far exceeded its value as a private airstrip.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by a large, upscale residential community known as 'The Estates at St. Annes' and the 'Back Creek' neighborhood, which includes the Back Creek Golf Club. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure.
Okolona Plantation Airport was a private airfield owned by H.B. du Pont, Jr., a member of the prominent du Pont family, who were influential industrialists in Delaware. The airport was established sometime between 1965 and 1968. It featured a single unpaved, 2,600-foot turf runway. Its operations were exclusively for general aviation, serving the personal and business travel needs of the du Pont family and their guests. It was a typical example of a private 'gentleman's airfield' associated with a large estate or plantation, common in the mid-20th century.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The land has been entirely and densely developed with permanent residential homes, streets, and a golf course. Re-establishing an airport at this location is logistically, financially, and legally impossible due to the existing land use.
