Approximately 2011-2013. The heliport was decommissioned and removed during the construction phase of a major hospital expansion that began in 2011.
The heliport was closed and demolished to allow for a significant expansion of the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children (now Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware). The land it occupied was redeveloped for a new hospital wing and a multi-story parking garage. Its function was not eliminated but rather upgraded and relocated.
The original site of the heliport is completely gone. The area has been fully redeveloped and is now occupied by the expanded main hospital building and a large parking structure. Helicopter operations for the hospital were moved to a new, modern rooftop helipad (FAA Identifier: 0DE1, Nemours Heliport) built atop the new hospital wing, which became operational upon the expansion's completion in 2014.
The Greenville Heliport was the original ground-level medical heliport for the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children. It played a crucial role in regional pediatric emergency medical services, handling medevac flights that transported critically ill and injured children to the specialized hospital. It primarily served air ambulance operators and was a vital link in the chain of care for the tri-state area (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey).
There are no prospects for reopening the original Greenville Heliport (US-11228). The site has been permanently redeveloped, and its purpose has been fully and more effectively replaced by the active rooftop helipad at the same location.
