The airport was closed between 1998 and 2000. It was still listed in the 1996 AOPA Airport Directory and its runway was clearly visible in a 1998 aerial photograph, but it was no longer listed in the 2000 AOPA directory, indicating it was decommissioned during that two-year period.
The specific reason is not officially documented, but the closure is consistent with the common fate of private airfields. It was likely closed due to the owner, William B. Warrington, ceasing aviation activities (due to retirement, death, or other personal reasons). Following the cessation of flights, the land was fully converted back to its primary agricultural use.
The site is currently used for agriculture. The land where the turf runway once existed has been fully integrated into the surrounding cultivated farm fields. There are no remaining airport facilities such as hangars, markers, or a windsock. However, the faint, straight-line outline of the former runway is still discernible in satellite imagery due to differences in soil compaction and vegetation.
Warrington Field was a private general aviation airfield, active from at least the mid-1960s to the late 1990s. It featured a single 2,200-foot unpaved turf runway, oriented as Runway 13/31. The field was owned and operated by the Warrington family, prominent in the local agricultural community. Its primary operation was for personal and recreational flying for the owner and associates. It was a typical example of the thousands of private farm strips that were common across rural America in the latter half of the 20th century, supporting the general aviation community at a local level.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Warrington Field. The land has been completely repurposed for farming, and the increasing residential and commercial development in Sussex County, Delaware, would make re-establishing an airfield at this location highly improbable due to zoning, land use, and potential community opposition.
