Circa 1996. The heliport was officially closed following the acquisition of its owner, the Strawbridge & Clothier department store chain, by the May Department Stores Company.
Change of ownership and obsolescence. The heliport was a private facility used for corporate transport by Strawbridge & Clothier executives. When the company was sold in 1996, the new parent company had no operational need for a private heliport at this specific retail location, making it redundant.
The site of the former heliport is the rooftop of the Macy's department store, which was the successor to the Strawbridge's store at the Christiana Mall. The helipad markings and any associated aviation infrastructure have been removed or covered over during subsequent roof maintenance. The area is now an ordinary building roof, housing HVAC equipment and other standard utilities, and is not used for any aviation-related activities.
The Strawbridge Christiana Mall Heliport, which also used the FAA identifier 0DE3, was a private rooftop heliport. Its primary function was to facilitate executive travel, typically for company leaders flying between the corporate headquarters in Philadelphia and the major anchor store at the Christiana Mall. It was a symbol of corporate prestige during the 1980s and early 1990s, reflecting an era when large retail chains utilized private aviation. Operations were limited to private, VFR (Visual Flight Rules) helicopter flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The original operator no longer exists, the physical infrastructure is gone, and there is no modern business case or demand for a private heliport at this retail location. Re-establishing the facility would require significant investment and FAA recertification, making it extremely unlikely.
