Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-1980s. The airport was listed in the 1982 AOPA Airport Directory but was no longer depicted on aeronautical charts by 1987. Aerial imagery from the early 1990s shows residential construction underway on the site.

Reason for Closure

Urban encroachment and real estate development. The land on which the private airstrip was located was sold and redeveloped into a dense suburban residential area to accommodate the southward expansion of the Denver metropolitan area.

Current Status

The airport site has been completely obliterated by development. It is now the location of the Chatfield Bluffs residential neighborhood in Littleton, Colorado, specifically in the area between W. Chatfield Avenue and W. Stony Creek Drive, just west of S. Platte Canyon Road. The land is now occupied by single-family homes, streets, and community parks. There are no visible remnants of the former runway or any associated airport structures.

Historical Significance

Bowen Farms Number 1 Airport was a small, privately owned airfield. Its historical significance is representative of the numerous private farm strips that were common in the rural areas surrounding Denver before the suburban boom of the late 20th century. It featured a single, unpaved north/south turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long. Operations were limited to general aviation, serving the personal and recreational flying needs of its owner and likely a small number of other local pilots with small, single-engine aircraft. It had no known commercial or military role.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. The land has been fully and densely developed for residential use for over three decades. There is no available space and no possibility of the airport ever reopening at its original location.
