Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2007

Reason for Closure

The heliport was closed due to the complete relocation of the hospital it served. The University of Colorado Hospital moved from its long-time campus at 9th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard in Denver to the new, state-of-the-art Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. The move was a multi-year process, concluding around 2007. As the heliport's sole function was to support the hospital's emergency and critical care operations, it was decommissioned when the hospital ceased operations at the Denver site.

Current Status

The site of the former hospital and its heliport has been completely demolished and redeveloped. The area is now a large, mixed-use urban development known as '9+CO' (short for 9th and Colorado). The development includes retail stores (such as Target and Trader Joe's), numerous restaurants, a movie theater, residential apartment buildings, and office spaces. The land formerly occupied by the heliport is now part of this modern commercial and residential neighborhood, with no trace of the previous medical facility remaining.

Historical Significance

The University Hospital Heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for the Rocky Mountain region's healthcare system for several decades. As the primary air access for a Level I Trauma Center, it handled countless medical evacuation (medevac) flights. Helicopters like Flight for Life Colorado frequently used the heliport to transport critically injured patients from accident scenes and to transfer patients requiring specialized care from other medical facilities across Colorado and neighboring states. Its operation was integral to saving lives and was a symbol of the hospital's role as a major tertiary care and trauma center.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the heliport at this location. The hospital it served has permanently moved, and the land has been irrevocably repurposed for high-density commercial and residential use. The new University of Colorado Hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora operates its own modern heliport (or heliports) to fulfill the critical care transport needs for the region.
