The heliport was closed as a direct result of the relocation of the entire St. Anthony Hospital Central campus. The hospital moved from its original location near Sloan's Lake in Denver to a new, state-of-the-art facility in Lakewood, Colorado. The old hospital building, including the heliport, was subsequently demolished to make way for a new urban development.
The site of the former hospital and heliport has been completely redeveloped. It is now a vibrant, mixed-use urban neighborhood known as the 'Sloan's' or 'Sloan's Lake' development. The area features modern apartment complexes, townhomes, retail stores (including a Target), restaurants, a movie theater, and public spaces. There is no trace of the former hospital or its heliport.
The St. Anthony Hospital Central Heliport held significant historical importance as the home base for 'Flight For Life Colorado,' which was established in 1972. This was the first civilian, hospital-based air ambulance program in the United States, pioneering a model for emergency medical services that has since been adopted worldwide. For nearly 40 years, the heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for the region's premier Level I Trauma Center. It facilitated the rapid transport of thousands of critically injured and ill patients from accident scenes and other medical facilities, playing a vital role in saving countless lives.
There are zero prospects for reopening this heliport. The original facility has been demolished, and the land has been permanently repurposed for high-density residential and commercial use. St. Anthony Hospital now operates a new, modern heliport (St Anthony Hospital Heliport, ICAO: FA37) at its current campus in Lakewood, Colorado, which continues the mission of the original Flight For Life service.
