The airport was closed between 2003 and 2005. The last known aerial photograph showing the runway in a usable condition was taken in 2002. By 2005, construction had commenced on a residential housing development, erasing the airfield.
The closure was due to economic reasons driven by urban development. As the city of Galt expanded, the land became significantly more valuable for residential use than for private aviation. The owner sold the property to developers, a common fate for small, privately-owned airfields located on the fringes of growing urban areas.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision. The area is now covered with single-family homes, parks, and streets, including Vintage Oak Avenue and Silverstone Drive, which run through the former airport grounds. No physical trace of the runway or any associated aviation facilities remains.
Flying R Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its name was derived from its owner in the 1990s, Norman Ravera. The airport consisted of a single, unpaved north/south turf runway, approximately 2,200 feet in length. It was primarily used by the owner and likely a few other local pilots for recreational flying in light aircraft. It was a typical example of the numerous private airstrips that once dotted the rural landscape of California's Central Valley before being consumed by suburban sprawl.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for residential housing, making any future aviation use at this location impossible.
