The airport was officially closed sometime between late 1999 and 2004. It was last depicted as an active private airfield on the October 1999 Sectional Aeronautical Chart and was no longer shown on the 2004 chart.
The primary reason for closure was economic, driven by a change in land use. The property was converted from open fields suitable for an airstrip into a high-value nut orchard (likely almonds or walnuts). This agricultural conversion made the land more profitable for farming than for aviation, a common reason for the closure of private airstrips in California's Central Valley.
The site is currently an active and mature nut orchard. The physical runway no longer exists for aviation purposes, but its former path is still clearly visible on satellite imagery as a wide dirt access road running through the center of the orchard.
Butte Creek Hog Ranch Airport was a private airfield that served a large agricultural ranch. First appearing on charts in the mid-1970s, it featured a single unpaved, north-south runway approximately 2,600 feet in length. Its operations were typical for a private ranch strip, likely handling light general aviation aircraft for the personal transportation of the owners and potentially agricultural aircraft (crop dusters) to support farming activities on the property.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The conversion of the site into a productive, high-value orchard makes any potential reopening economically and logistically infeasible, as it would require the complete removal of the mature trees.
