Approximately mid-to-late 1990s. The exact date is not documented, but its closure is tied to the period when the Mission Viejo Company completed its master-planned development of Aliso Viejo and was subsequently sold in 1997.
The primary reason for closure was the completion of the business purpose for which it was built. The helistop supported the large-scale land development activities of the Mission Viejo Company. As the Aliso Viejo community was built out and the company's role shifted, the need for the facility diminished. The land was then repurposed for high-density commercial development as part of the city's growth.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as a former aviation facility. The coordinates (33.572201, -117.725998) now correspond to the parking lot and grounds of the Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo Laguna Beach Hotel, located at 50 Enterprise, Aliso Viejo, CA. The area is a dense corporate and commercial center.
The Mission Viejo Company Helistop was a private facility integral to the development of one of Southern California's last major master-planned communities. It was not open to the public. Its operations were exclusively for the Mission Viejo Company's business, which included:
- Transporting executives and engineers between offices and vast construction sites.
- Conducting aerial surveys for planning and monitoring the progress of the community's development.
- Providing marketing and promotional flights for potential large-scale investors, partners, and public officials to showcase the scope of the project.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed with a major hotel and fitness center. The original operator's need for the facility is gone, and the current dense urban environment makes re-establishing a helistop at this location infeasible.
