Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

The heliport ceased operations in the early to mid-2010s. The physical site was permanently demolished along with the rest of the Ports O' Call Village starting in 2017.

Reason for Closure

The closure was a direct result of economic decline and urban redevelopment. The heliport was an amenity for the Ports O' Call Village, a tourist-focused shopping and dining complex that had fallen into disrepair. The entire village was closed and demolished by the Port of Los Angeles to make way for a new, modern waterfront project, making the heliport obsolete and leading to its removal.

Current Status

The site of the former heliport no longer exists. The entire area has been cleared and is part of the active construction site for 'West Harbor,' a major new waterfront development. This new complex will feature restaurants, retail stores, an amphitheater, and public recreational spaces.

Historical Significance

Ports O' Call Heliport was primarily a commercial and tourist facility. Its main function was to support helicopter tour operations offering scenic flights over the vast Port of Los Angeles, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and the Southern California coastline. It provided an exciting attraction for visitors to the Ports O' Call Village. Additionally, it served as a convenient private landing spot for individuals flying in to visit the area's popular restaurants and shops, adding to the village's appeal during its heyday from the 1960s through the 1990s.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known public plans or prospects for reopening a heliport at this location. The official plans for the West Harbor development do not include a heliport, as the project's focus is on creating a pedestrian-friendly commercial and entertainment destination.
