The exact date is unknown, but based on historical satellite imagery, the heliport was decommissioned sometime between the late 1990s and the early 2000s. A helipad marking is visible in 1994 imagery, but it is gone in imagery from 2002 onwards.
The heliport was a private facility owned by and serving the company 'American Display, Inc.', which was located on the property. The closure was due to business-related reasons. Such private facilities are typically closed when the company relocates, ceases operations, is acquired, or no longer has a business need or budget for helicopter transport. There is no indication of closure due to an accident or military conversion.
The site of the former heliport has been fully redeveloped. The helipad and its markings have been removed, and the area is now an indistinguishable part of the asphalt parking lot for a large, multi-tenant commercial and light industrial building. The property, located at 29401 Rancho Viejo Road in San Juan Capistrano (on the border of Rancho Santa Margarita), now houses several businesses, including a prominent U-Haul Moving & Storage facility.
This was a private-use (PPR - Prior Permission Required) heliport with limited historical significance. Its sole purpose was to support the corporate operations of American Display, Inc., a company specializing in large-format printing and displays. Operations would have consisted of low-volume flights, likely for executive or client transportation, providing rapid access to the corporate office and avoiding Southern California's traffic. It was a piece of corporate infrastructure, not a public-use facility.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The facility has been permanently decommissioned and the land has been repurposed as a commercial parking lot. The original owner and operator, American Display, Inc., no longer occupies the site. Re-establishing a heliport would be legally and logistically prohibitive, requiring new permits, zoning approvals, and a demonstrated need from the current property owners and tenants, none of which is anticipated.
