Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

The airstrip was closed between 1992 and 2003. The last known aerial photograph showing the runway intact was from 1992. By 2003, aerial imagery shows the area being graded for the new housing development. The closure likely occurred in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

Reason for Closure

The closure was a direct result of urban encroachment and real estate development. The land, located in the rapidly growing Phoenix metropolitan area, became significantly more valuable for residential housing. The massive Estrella Mountain Ranch planned community expanded over the site, leading to the airstrip's removal.

Current Status

The site of the former airstrip has been completely redeveloped and is now a high-density residential neighborhood. It is part of the Estrella Mountain Ranch community in Goodyear, Arizona. The approximate alignment of the former runway is now covered by homes and streets, including portions of South San Gabriel Drive and West San Miguel Avenue.

Historical Significance

Coyner Airstrip was a private, general aviation airfield. It was not a major commercial or military facility. Its significance is as a representative example of the many small, private airstrips that once existed on the outskirts of Phoenix before the suburban boom of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. First appearing on the 1971 Phoenix Sectional Chart, it was listed as a private field with a single 2,600-foot unpaved runway. It was primarily used by its owner for personal aircraft operations.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and fully converted to residential use, making it physically impossible to re-establish an airport at this location.
