Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Between 1998 and 2004. The airport was last depicted on the 1998 New Orleans Sectional Chart. By 2004, aerial imagery shows a road had been constructed across the southern end of the runway, indicating it was no longer operational. The closure was gradual as the land was prepared for redevelopment.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically urban development. The land on which the private airfield was located became more valuable for residential real estate than for aviation. The rapid suburban growth of Daphne, Alabama, led to the sale and redevelopment of the property into a housing subdivision.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now a residential housing subdivision known as 'The Reserve at Daphne'. The former runway and all associated aviation facilities have been removed. The area is now occupied by single-family homes, streets (such as Belforest Boulevard and Canopy Drive), and residential infrastructure. There are no visible remnants of the original airfield.

Historical Significance

Belforest Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 3,000 feet long, aligned north-south (Runway 18/36). It was not depicted on aeronautical charts in the early 1970s but appeared by the mid-1980s. The airport was primarily used by light, single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and was associated with the Belforest Hunting Club, which was the listed owner. It served as a local hub for private pilots but had no commercial or military operations.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely converted to high-density residential use, making any future aviation activity at this location impossible.
