Approximately 2013-2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad's painted 'H' marking was visible until around 2013 but had completely faded and disappeared by 2015, indicating it fell into disuse and was officially decommissioned during this period.
The heliport was a private facility for corporate use. Its closure was not due to a specific incident but rather a cessation of operational need and likely corporate cost-saving measures. The heliport was located at the Courtaulds Fibers industrial plant, which was acquired by Lenzing AG. Such corporate changes often lead to a re-evaluation of assets and operational expenses, and the heliport was likely deemed no longer necessary for executive transport or other operations.
The site of the former Lemoyne Heliport is now an unmarked, open grassy area within the secure perimeter of the active Lenzing Fibers plant in Axis, Alabama. There are no remaining structures, markings, or infrastructure to indicate that a heliport ever existed at the location. The surrounding industrial complex is fully operational.
Lemoyne Heliport had no major public or historical significance; it was a private corporate heliport. Its sole function was to serve the large adjacent industrial plant, originally owned by Courtaulds Fibers Inc., a major manufacturer of rayon and other fibers and a significant local employer in Axis, AL. The heliport was used primarily for executive and VIP transport, allowing company officials and clients to travel directly to the plant, bypassing the need to drive from regional airports like Mobile Regional Airport (KMOB). It may have also been used for emergency parts delivery or aerial inspection of the large facility.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The decision to reactivate the facility would be entirely up to the site's private owner, Lenzing Fibers. Given that it was closed due to a lack of need, and corporate transportation logistics have not indicated a renewed demand for such private heliports, a reopening is considered highly improbable.
