Approximately October 10, 2015. The heliport ceased all operations concurrently with the relocation of the hospital it served.
Relocation of the associated hospital. Trinity Medical Center moved its entire operation to a new, larger facility on U.S. Highway 280 and was rebranded as Grandview Medical Center. The heliport at the old Montclair Road location was an integral part of the hospital's infrastructure and was decommissioned as it was no longer needed.
The former hospital campus, including the site of the heliport, has been undergoing extensive demolition and redevelopment. The original heliport structure has been removed. The site is being transformed into a mixed-use development, with a significant portion dedicated to 'Avondale Samaritan Place,' a project featuring affordable senior living apartments and community ministry services.
The heliport was a critical asset for Trinity Medical Center (and its predecessor, Montclair Baptist Medical Center) for decades. Its primary function was to support air ambulance services for medical evacuations (medevac). It served as the landing zone for helicopters transporting critically ill and injured patients from accident scenes and other regional hospitals to Trinity's Level III Trauma Center. The heliport was a vital link in the regional emergency medical services (EMS) network, facilitating the rapid transport essential for treating time-sensitive conditions like severe trauma, strokes, and heart attacks.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening a heliport at this specific location. The advanced medical services, trauma center, and emergency department that necessitated the heliport were permanently transferred to the new Grandview Medical Center, which operates its own modern, active heliport (FAA LID: 1AL9). The redevelopment of the old Trinity site is not focused on acute medical care and therefore has no requirement for a heliport.
