Circa late 1990s (between 1995 and 2002). The last known aerial photograph showing the runway intact was from 1995, and by 2002, the site was being actively redeveloped.
Urban encroachment and real estate development. The airport was located in what was once a rural area. However, the rapid westward expansion of the Houston metropolitan area into Katy made the land extremely valuable for residential housing. The pressure from suburban sprawl led to the airport's sale and subsequent redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airfield. It is the location of the 'Grand Lakes' master-planned residential community. The former runway and airport grounds are now covered by single-family homes, streets (such as Aviara Lane, possibly a nod to its aviation past), man-made lakes, and community parks.
Sack-O-Grande Acroport was a well-known private airfield dedicated to aerobatic flying, as its name 'Acroport' suggests. It was famously owned and operated by Marion Cole, a legendary airshow pilot and member of the Cole Brothers Airshows. The airport was a hub for the aerobatic community in the Houston region, used for training, practice, and maintenance of high-performance aerobatic aircraft like the Pitts Special. It featured a single 3,000-foot unpaved turf runway (Runway 17/35).
None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The land has been irreversibly and densely redeveloped into a suburban neighborhood, making any return to aviation use impossible.
