Circa 2010-2012. The airport was depicted on the 2009 Seattle Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 2013 edition, indicating it was officially closed within that timeframe. Aerial imagery from the period confirms a decline in maintenance and activity.
Economic reasons and declining utility. The airport, which operated under the FAA identifier WN75, was owned by the Port of Pend Oreille. Like many small, rural, public-use airfields, it likely faced challenges with funding for maintenance, insurance, and operations. With no major commercial or industrial demand, the cost of keeping the airfield open likely outweighed its benefits to the Port, leading to its closure and removal from official aviation charts.
The site is defunct as an airport. As of the early 2020s, the former turf runway is still faintly visible from the air but is heavily overgrown and completely unusable for aviation. The land appears to be private property, with the former airstrip area being an open field. There are no active aviation facilities on the site. It has effectively reverted to undeveloped rural land.
River Bend Airport (WN75) was a small general aviation airfield serving the local community of Cusick and the surrounding Pend Oreille County. It was not a site of major historical events. Its primary role was to support recreational flying and provide air access for private pilots in this rural part of Washington. The airport was established sometime prior to 1996 and featured a single unpaved turf/dirt runway (Runway 2/20) with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. It served as a basic but functional landing strip for light aircraft for about 15-20 years.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening River Bend Airport. It has been officially closed for over a decade, and the Port of Pend Oreille no longer lists it as an asset. Re-establishing the airport would require significant investment to clear and restore the runway, meet current FAA standards, and secure a new operating authority. Given the likely economic factors that led to its closure, a reopening is considered highly improbable.
