Hospital Relocation. The heliport was an integral part of the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. When the hospital relocated to a new, modern facility on Godwin Boulevard in 2002 (becoming Sentara Obici Hospital), the heliport at the old North Main Street site became obsolete and was permanently decommissioned.
The site of the former hospital and its heliport has been completely redeveloped. The old hospital building was demolished circa 2011. The land is now occupied by 'Obici Place,' a mixed-use development that includes a large retail shopping center (with tenants like Kroger and DSW) and residential apartment complexes. The original heliport no longer exists.
The Old Louise Obici Memorial Hospital Heliport was a private-use facility dedicated to medical operations. Its primary function was to support the hospital's emergency and trauma services by facilitating medical evacuation (medevac) flights. Air ambulance services, such as the regional Nightingale helicopter, used the heliport to rapidly transport critically ill or injured patients to the hospital, significantly reducing travel time from accident scenes or other medical facilities. It was a vital component of the regional emergency medical system for Suffolk and the surrounding Hampton Roads area from its establishment until the hospital's relocation.
None. The site has been fully redeveloped for commercial and residential use, and the original hospital it served has been replaced by a new facility at a different location. The new Sentara Obici Hospital operates its own modern heliport (Sentara Obici Hospital Heliport, FAA LID: 1VA3). There are no plans or possibilities for reopening the heliport at its original location.
