Approximately between 2004 and 2006. The airport was depicted on aeronautical charts as late as 1998 and the runway was still clearly visible in 2004 aerial imagery. By 2006, aerial photos show the land being actively farmed, indicating the airport had ceased operations.
The specific reason is not officially documented. However, as a privately owned airfield named after its owner (Paul Bayes), the closure was most likely due to personal reasons such as the owner's retirement from flying, death, or the sale of the property. This is a common reason for the closure of small, private general aviation strips. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a specific accident, regulatory action, or larger economic reasons.
The site has been fully converted back to agricultural land. The area of the former turf runway is now a farm field where crops are regularly planted. The faint outline of the runway can still be discerned in some high-resolution satellite images. A large building, likely the original hangar, still exists on the southeast end of the former runway, and is presumably now used for agricultural storage.
Bayes Airport was a private general aviation airfield serving the local area. Its significance was not national but was important to its owner and any local pilots who may have used it. It appeared on aeronautical charts from at least 1971. The facility consisted of a single turf (grass) runway, aligned approximately NW/SE, with a length of about 2,600 feet. It handled light, single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational purposes.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Bayes Airport. The land is privately owned and has been in active agricultural use for well over a decade, making a return to aviation operations extremely unlikely.
