Approximately between 1994 and 1998. The heliport was depicted on the 1994 New York Sectional Chart but was no longer listed in the official 1998 Airport/Facility Directory.
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the shutdown and subsequent demolition of the corporate facility it served. The site was the former headquarters for the RCA Solid State Division. After RCA was acquired by General Electric in 1986, this division was sold to Harris Semiconductor in 1988. The facility was eventually closed, and the entire property was sold for commercial redevelopment, making the heliport obsolete.
The site of the former heliport and the entire RCA corporate campus has been completely razed and redeveloped. It is now the location of the 'Bridgewater Towne Centre,' a large-scale retail shopping complex. The coordinates point to an area now occupied by the shopping center's buildings and parking lots. No trace of the original heliport or the RCA facility remains.
The RCA Sommerville Heliport, which also used the FAA identifier S48, was a private corporate heliport built to serve the sprawling RCA Solid State Technology Center in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Its primary operation was executive transport, providing a quick and direct link for RCA executives and high-priority personnel to and from major regional airports (like Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK) and other corporate sites in the Northeast. The heliport, featuring a 100x100 foot paved helipad, was an integral part of the infrastructure for a major hub of semiconductor research, development, and manufacturing during the height of RCA's influence in the electronics industry.
None. The land has been permanently repurposed for intensive commercial retail use. The original infrastructure is gone, and the site is now occupied by large stores like Wegmans, Costco, and Home Depot. There are no known plans, proposals, or physical possibilities for reopening a heliport at this location.
