Approximately between 1994 and 2000. The airport was listed as active in the 1994 St. Louis Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was noted as closed in the 2000 AOPA Airport Directory.
The airport was a private airstrip. While the exact reason is not publicly documented, closures of such small, private airfields are typically due to the owner ceasing aviation activities, selling the property, or for personal economic reasons. There is no evidence to suggest closure from a major accident, military conversion, or urban development.
The airport is permanently closed. The site has been fully reclaimed for agricultural use. Current satellite imagery shows the land where the runway was located is now actively cultivated farmland. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible, but the land is plowed and planted as part of the surrounding fields. The nearby farm buildings remain.
Townley Farms Airport was a small, privately owned airfield primarily serving general aviation. It was owned by William Townley and was associated with the adjacent farm. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36, with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. Its operations would have been for personal and/or agricultural purposes, such as crop dusting or private transportation. It represented a common type of private-use airstrip that supported rural and agricultural communities in the United States during the latter half of the 20th century.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Townley Farms Airport. The land has been integrated back into the farm's agricultural operations for over two decades. The aviation needs of the Mattoon area are served by the Coles County Memorial Airport (KMTO), located a few miles to the southwest.
