Circa 2013-2014. The exact date is not public, but the closure directly correlates with the acquisition of its operator, National EMS, by American Medical Response (AMR) in late 2013.
Corporate acquisition and operational consolidation. The heliport was a private facility for National EMS. When the company was acquired by the much larger American Medical Response (AMR), operations were integrated and consolidated into AMR's existing network. This made a separate headquarters heliport for the former company redundant, leading to its closure.
The site is no longer used for aviation. The former National EMS headquarters building at 1261 Commercial Drive SW is now occupied by other commercial and light industrial businesses. The area where the helipad was located is now used as a standard parking lot and loading area. Faint markings of the helipad may still be visible on the pavement in satellite imagery, but it is not a certified or operational landing zone.
The National EMS Headquarters Heliport was a vital component of the emergency healthcare system for the eastern metropolitan Atlanta area and surrounding counties like Rockdale, Newton, and Morgan. It served as the primary base of operations for National EMS's air ambulance (medevac) helicopter fleet. From this location, helicopters were dispatched to accident scenes and rural hospitals to provide rapid transport for critically injured or ill patients to major trauma centers, significantly reducing transport times and improving patient outcomes.
None. The heliport was a private-use facility tied specifically to the former National EMS headquarters. With that company no longer existing as an independent entity and the site having been repurposed for general commercial use, there are no plans or logical prospects for it to reopen as a heliport.
