Circa 1968
The airport was closed after being replaced by the new, more modern El Reno Regional Airport (ICAO: KRQO), which was activated in 1968. The original airfield, with its aging World War II-era infrastructure, became redundant and was subsequently decommissioned for aviation use.
The site of the former airport is now occupied by the Canadian Valley Technology Center (CVTC), El Reno Campus. The original runways, taxiways, and apron areas are still clearly visible from satellite imagery, though they are in a deteriorated condition. The expansive paved surfaces are now primarily used by the CVTC for its truck driver training program, where students practice maneuvering large vehicles. Some of the original WWII-era buildings and hangars have been repurposed or replaced by the modern educational facilities of the campus.
The airport was originally constructed in 1942 as Mustang Field, a primary flight training school for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. It operated under contract with the Wilson-Bonfils Flying School, where aviation cadets received their initial flight training, primarily using Fairchild PT-19 trainers. After the war, in 1945, the military declared the airfield surplus and transferred ownership to the City of El Reno. It then served as the El Reno Municipal Airport for over two decades, handling general aviation traffic for the local community until its closure.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airport. The city is well-served by the active El Reno Regional Airport (KRQO). Furthermore, the property has been extensively redeveloped into a major educational campus, and the original aviation infrastructure is no longer suitable for modern aircraft operations without a complete and cost-prohibitive reconstruction.
