Approximately between 1994 and 1999. The airport was still visible in 1994 aerial photos but was no longer depicted on the 1999 Washington Sectional Chart. Construction for the housing development that replaced it was underway by 2002.
Economic reasons, specifically the sale of the airport property for large-scale real estate development. The land was located in Loudoun County, Virginia, which experienced explosive suburban growth during the 1990s. The value of the land for residential housing far exceeded its value as a private airfield, leading to its sale and subsequent redevelopment.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now unrecognizable as an airport. The former runway and airport grounds are now occupied by a large portion of the 'South Riding' planned residential community. Key roads such as Tall Cedars Parkway and Center Street, along with hundreds of single-family homes, townhouses, and the South Riding Town Center, are built directly on the former airfield site. There are no remaining visible traces of the runway or any airport structures.
Glascock Airport (former FAA Location Identifier: 8VA0) was a private-use, general aviation airfield owned by local landowner and pilot Remmel Glascock. Established sometime prior to 1970, it served the local aviation community as a classic grass airstrip. It featured a single unpaved, 2,600-foot turf runway aligned north-south (Runway 18/36). The airport was a hub for local pilots to base their personal aircraft and represented a type of small, community-focused airfield that was once common in the rural areas surrounding Washington D.C. but has since largely disappeared due to urban sprawl.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and densely developed with high-value residential and commercial properties. Reacquiring the land would be financially prohibitive, and the surrounding community would make a return to aviation use impossible due to safety and noise concerns.
