Circa 2011-2012. The exact date is not publicly documented, but its closure coincided with the construction and opening of the new IU Health Neuroscience Center and its integrated, modern heliport (FAA LID: 22IN).
Replacement and Modernization. The heliport was rendered obsolete and decommissioned after Indiana University Health constructed a new, larger, and more capable rooftop heliport (22IN) on the nearby Neuroscience Center building. This was part of a major campus expansion and consolidation project to better support the needs of the IU Health LifeLine fleet and the Level I Trauma Center.
The site of the former heliport is the rooftop of an existing building (A-Building) within the active IU Health Methodist Hospital campus. All helicopter operations were permanently transferred to the newer heliport (22IN) located atop the IU Health Neuroscience Center (Goodman Hall) on the same campus. The original site is no longer used for aviation.
The Medical Center Heliport, also known as the Methodist Hospital Heliport, was a vital asset for the IU Health Methodist Hospital, a major Level I Trauma Center. For over three decades, it served as a primary landing site for the IU Health LifeLine air ambulance service, which was founded in 1979. The heliport handled thousands of critical life-saving flights, facilitating the rapid transport of trauma victims and critically ill patients from across Indiana and neighboring states directly to the hospital's emergency and surgical departments. It played a crucial role in the regional emergency medical system.
None. The heliport has been permanently and functionally replaced by a superior facility. There are no plans or operational needs to reopen US-10970, as the current IU Health Methodist Hospital Heliport (22IN) fully serves the hospital's and the LifeLine program's requirements for the foreseeable future.
