Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was closed sometime between 1970 and 1981. It was last depicted on the 1970 Cincinnati Sectional Chart but was no longer listed in the 1982 AOPA Airport Directory or depicted on the 1981 World Aeronautical Chart.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and subsequent real estate development. The land, located in a growing suburban area just outside of Louisville, became significantly more valuable for residential housing than for a private airstrip. This led to the sale of the property and its redevelopment.

Current Status

The site of the former Timmons Field has been completely redeveloped into the 'Manor Creek' residential subdivision. The main road through the neighborhood, Manor Creek Drive, follows the exact alignment and approximate length of the former runway. There are no visible remnants of the airport; the hangars, runway, and any other aviation infrastructure have been replaced entirely by single-family homes, streets, and yards.

Historical Significance

Timmons Field was a small, private general aviation airfield, which also used the FAA location identifier KY61. It featured a single unpaved turf runway, oriented roughly northeast/southwest, with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. The airfield was used for recreational flying and served private pilots with small, single-engine aircraft like Cessnas and Pipers. It held no major commercial or military significance and was a characteristic example of the numerous private airstrips that dotted the American landscape in the mid-20th century before suburban expansion.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Timmons Field. The land is fully and densely occupied by a modern housing development, making it physically and legally impossible to re-establish an airport at this location.
