The airport was closed sometime between 1981 and 1995. The last known aeronautical chart depicting it as operational was the 1981 Houston Sectional Chart. A 1995 USGS aerial photograph clearly shows the runway marked with closed 'X' symbols, confirming it was no longer in use by that year.
While no single official reason is documented, the closure is characteristic of many small general aviation airports on the peripheries of major cities. The primary driver was almost certainly economic, fueled by urban encroachment. As the Houston metropolitan area expanded eastward, the value of the land for residential real estate development far exceeded its value as a small, private airfield, leading the owner(s) to sell the property.
The airport site has been completely redeveloped and is now the Sheldon Ridge residential housing development. All traces of the runway, taxiways, and hangars have been removed. The site's aviation past is commemorated through the street names in the subdivision, which include 'Skyhawk Drive', 'Stinson Street', and 'Cessna Street', all named after famous general aviation aircraft.
Skyhaven Airport, also known as Sheldon Airport (FAA Identifier: 54T), was a private general aviation airfield established in the post-World War II era, likely between 1945 and 1953. It served the local aviation community, catering to private pilots with light single-engine aircraft. For most of its operational life, it featured a single unpaved/turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length, and a few small hangars. It was never a major commercial or military facility; its significance was as a local hub for recreational flying and flight training when the area was still largely rural.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been irrevocably converted into a dense residential neighborhood, making a return to aviation use impossible.
