Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2004-2005. The airport was last depicted on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart. Aerial imagery from 2005 shows the runway still visible but with initial construction for a housing development underway, indicating the airport had ceased operations shortly before this time.

Reason for Closure

Real estate development. The land occupied by the airport was sold and redeveloped into a residential housing community. The location, being near Mill Creek and in the growing Sneads Ferry area, became more valuable for housing than for use as a private airfield.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped into a residential waterfront housing community named 'The Landing at Mill Creek'. The original runway's path is now occupied by the main road of the subdivision, 'Winding Creek Way'. No physical traces of the airport infrastructure remain, aside from the linear alignment of this road.

Historical Significance

Winding Creek Airport (FAA identifier: 3NC5) was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1977 and 1982. The 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory listed it as being owned by Winding Creek Farms and having a single 3,000-foot turf runway (Runway 5/23). Its operations were limited to light, private aircraft, serving the needs of its owners and other permitted pilots. It held no major commercial or military significance and was primarily a recreational and private-use facility.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land is now a fully built-out residential subdivision with numerous homes, roads, and associated infrastructure. Reopening the airport is not feasible as it would require the acquisition and demolition of the entire community.
