Approximately between 1966 and 1974. While the exact date is not recorded, aerial photography from 1966 shows the airport as active with at least one aircraft present. By 1974, aerial photos show the runway was still visible but deteriorated and no longer in use. The airport was not depicted on the 1975 Twin Cities Sectional Chart, confirming its closure by that time.
Urban encroachment and economic factors. The primary reason for the closure of Vieira Airport was the rapid suburban expansion of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area into Lino Lakes. As the community grew, the land became significantly more valuable for residential development than for use as a small private airport, a common fate for many similar airfields across the United States during that era.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision. The area where the runway and hangars once stood is now occupied by single-family homes, streets, and parks. The memory of the airfield is preserved in the name of a street within the development, 'Vieira Lane', which runs directly through the former airport property.
Vieira Airport (also known as Vieira Field) was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was established by and named after its owner, John Vieira, an aviation enthusiast. The airport featured a single, unpaved north/south runway and a few small buildings or hangars. It primarily served local private pilots for recreational flying and was a typical example of a post-WWII grassroots airfield. It was not a major commercial or military facility and did not typically appear on official aeronautical charts for much of its operational life, highlighting its private, low-traffic nature.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Vieira Airport. The land has been permanently and densely repurposed for residential use. All original aviation infrastructure was removed decades ago, and reacquiring the numerous private properties to rebuild an airport is legally, financially, and logistically impossible.
