The airport was completely and catastrophically destroyed by the Greensburg EF5 tornado. On the evening of May 4, 2007, a massive tornado with winds estimated over 205 mph (330 km/h) struck the town of Greensburg, destroying approximately 95% of the city. The airport, which was located on the southern edge of the main damage path, was directly hit and entirely obliterated. All hangars, buildings, navigation aids, and aircraft on the ground were destroyed, rendering the facility inoperable and beyond repair.
The site of the former airport has been completely repurposed as part of Greensburg's renowned sustainable 'green' rebuilding effort. The land is now an industrial and business park. A large John Deere dealership (BTI Greensburg) and other commercial and light industrial facilities have been built directly on the former airport grounds. While faint outlines of the old runway are still visible in satellite imagery, the site is no longer used for any aviation activities and is fully integrated into the town's new economic development zone.
Paul Windle Municipal Airport was a public-use, general aviation airport that served as a critical infrastructure hub for Greensburg and the surrounding Kiowa County. Its primary operations included supporting local agriculture (crop dusting), providing a base for air ambulance and medical transport flights, facilitating business and charter travel, and serving the local recreational flying community. It featured a single paved runway (17/35) and was an essential link for the rural community to the national aviation network.
There are zero prospects for reopening the Paul Windle Municipal Airport at its original location. The site was permanently closed and redeveloped. A new, modern replacement airport, the Greensburg-Kiowa County Airport (ICAO: KGBD), was constructed at a different location approximately 3 miles southeast of the city. The new airport opened in 2011 and now serves the aviation needs of the community, making the old site redundant.
