The exact date is unknown, but evidence suggests the airport closed between 1996 and 2006. It was last depicted on the 1993 Wichita Sectional Chart and was still visible in a 1996 USGS aerial photo. By the time of the 2004 Sectional Chart, it was no longer listed, and a 2006 aerial photo shows the runway area being actively farmed.
There is no official documented reason for the closure. However, given that the land was converted to agricultural use, the most likely reason is economic. The owner likely sold the property or decided that farming the land was more profitable than maintaining a private, low-traffic airfield. This is a common fate for small, rural general aviation airports.
The site of the former airpark has been completely converted into agricultural land. Current satellite imagery shows the area is now a cultivated farm field. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still slightly visible as a difference in soil color and texture, a 'ghost runway' common with reclaimed airfields. There are no remaining hangars, terminals, or other airport infrastructure on the site.
Saint Marys Airpark was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its significance was primarily local, serving private pilots in the St. Marys, Kansas, community. When active, it featured a single unpaved (turf) north/south runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. Operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft used for recreational flying, personal transportation, and potentially agricultural purposes. It was not a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger or cargo services.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Saint Marys Airpark. The land is privately owned and has been fully integrated into agricultural operations for many years. Re-establishing an airport would require significant investment and the acquisition of the land from its current owner. Given the proximity of other public-use airports, such as Wamego Municipal Airport (K6K5), there is no practical or economic driver for its reopening. The prospects are considered nonexistent.
