Approximately 2013-2014. The heliport ceased operations in conjunction with the relocation of its primary user, the KNBC news division, from the Burbank facility to the new NBCUniversal Broadcast Center in Universal City.
Corporate relocation and real estate redevelopment. In 2007, NBCUniversal sold the Burbank studio complex and began a multi-year process of consolidating its West Coast operations at its nearby Universal City property. The heliport became obsolete once the news operations it served moved to the new facility, which has its own modern heliport (NBC Universal Heliport, FAA LID: 8CA9).
The site is part of the former NBC Burbank studio lot. This entire property has been sold and is undergoing a major redevelopment known as the 'Burbank Studios' project. Warner Bros. Discovery acquired the property and is redeveloping it to be a major technology and production hub, with plans to move thousands of its employees there by 2025. The original heliport infrastructure has been decommissioned and removed as part of the extensive new construction and modernization of the campus.
The heliport was an integral part of the iconic NBC Burbank Studios, famously referenced as 'Beautiful Downtown Burbank' on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.' It primarily served the news division of KNBC, the NBC owned-and-operated station in Los Angeles. For decades, news helicopters (often branded as 'NewsChopper 4') were based here, providing rapid deployment for live coverage of breaking news, police chases, traffic, and major events across the sprawling Southern California landscape. This capability was crucial for the station's local news dominance. The heliport was also occasionally used for transporting high-profile talent and for aerial cinematography for television productions filmed on the lot.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this specific heliport. The original operator (NBC/KNBC) has permanently moved and operates a new heliport. The new owner of the property, Warner Bros. Discovery, has its own separate heliport facilities nearby (Warner Bros. Heliport, FAA LID: 2CA7) and the site's redevelopment plan does not include the reactivation of the former NBC heliport.
