Approximately between 1980 and 1986. The airpark was still shown as operational on the 1980 Los Angeles Sectional Chart but was no longer depicted on the 1986 edition, indicating it closed in the early 1980s.
Suburban development and economic pressures. As the Temecula Valley and surrounding areas like Winchester experienced a major population boom starting in the 1980s, the value of the land for residential housing far exceeded its value as a small private airport. The airpark was sold to developers and re-zoned for housing.
The former airport site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now a dense single-family residential neighborhood. There are no visible traces of the former runway, hangars, or any other aviation infrastructure. The entire area was re-graded and built over with homes and streets. Some local street names, such as 'Pinewood Street', may be a subtle homage to the old airpark.
Pines Airpark was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield that was active from at least the early 1950s. It primarily served local pilots for recreational flying. The facility consisted of a single unpaved, east-west runway (Runway 8/26) approximately 2,600 feet in length. It was a characteristic example of the numerous small, rural airstrips that were common throughout Southern California before the region's massive suburban expansion. The name 'Pines' was likely a reference to the nearby community of Homeland, which was historically known as 'The Pines'. The provided ICAO code 'US-10860' is a non-standard identifier from a third-party database; the airport did not have an official ICAO or FAA identifier for much of its existence and, being a small private field, never had an IATA code.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Pines Airpark. The land is fully occupied by a residential housing development, making any return to aviation use physically and legally impossible.
