The airport was closed sometime between 1982 and 1995. The last known directory listing as an active airport was in the 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory. A 1995 USGS aerial photograph clearly shows the runway marked with large, closed 'X' symbols, indicating it was no longer operational by that time.
The closure was due to economic reasons tied to the associated business. The airport was a private field built and operated by the Thunderbird Southwest company, which manufactured fiberglass boats. The airport was likely deemed redundant and closed after the company ceased or significantly altered its operations at the La Grange facility. The valuable industrial land was then repurposed.
The site has been fully converted into the Thunderbird Southwest Industrial Park. The original runway is still visible from satellite imagery but now serves as the main access road, named Thunderbird Drive, and as an open storage area for the park's tenants. The original hangars and manufacturing facilities have been repurposed and are occupied by various other businesses. The land is no longer an aviation facility in any capacity.
Thunderbird Southwest Airport was a private general aviation airport that served a specific industrial purpose. Established around 1970, it was built to support the operations of the Thunderbird Southwest boat manufacturing plant located on the property. It featured a single paved runway, listed as 3,000 feet of asphalt in 1982. The airport allowed company executives, partners, and high-value clients to fly directly to the factory, facilitating business. It was never a public-use airport and primarily handled light private and corporate aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The complete redevelopment of the site into an active industrial park, with buildings and infrastructure built on and around the former runway, makes reopening logistically and financially unfeasible. The site will continue to operate as an industrial park.
