Approximately between 1977 and 1980. The airport was depicted on the 1977 DFW Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1980 chart.
The closure was primarily due to economic factors and urban encroachment. As the city of Stillwater expanded eastward, the land became more valuable for commercial and residential development, a common fate for small, privately-owned airfields located on the edge of growing cities. Its proximity to the larger, publicly-owned Stillwater Regional Airport (KSWO) also likely made it redundant.
The airport site has been completely redeveloped. The southern portion of the former runway and airfield property is now occupied by the maintenance facility for the Karsten Creek Golf Club, the official golf course of Oklahoma State University. The northern portion of the runway's path is still a somewhat open, grassy area, but the land is fully integrated into the golf course and surrounding developments. No original airport infrastructure, such as hangars or markings, remains.
Hilltop Airport, also known as Hilltop Airpark, was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. Its primary role was to serve local private pilots and their aircraft. When active, it featured a single unpaved (turf or dirt) runway, approximately 2,400-2,600 feet in length, and a few small hangars and support buildings. It catered to single-engine light aircraft and represented a typical grassroots aviation facility common in the mid-20th century. It was not a major commercial or military hub but was a part of the local aviation community for about two decades.
There are zero prospects for reopening Hilltop Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-value commercial and recreational use (the golf course). The surrounding area is now developed, making any potential airport operations incompatible with current land use. All aviation needs for the Stillwater area are served by the nearby Stillwater Regional Airport (KSWO).
