The exact date is unknown, but evidence suggests the airport closed sometime between 1993 and 2003. Aeronautical charts from 1993 still depicted the airfield, but it was absent from the 2003 charts. Satellite imagery from 1995 shows a well-maintained runway, while images from the mid-2000s show it becoming overgrown and unserviceable.
No official reason for the closure has been publicly documented. As a private airfield serving a ranch, the closure was most likely due to private circumstances. Common reasons for such closures include the property being sold, the owner no longer flying, the cost of maintenance becoming prohibitive, or a change in the owner's personal or business needs. The land is now actively used for ranching and oil/gas extraction.
The airport is permanently closed and has reverted to ranchland. As of the 2020s, a faint outline of the former north/south runway is still visible in satellite imagery, but it is completely overgrown with grass and brush, making it unusable for aircraft. The surrounding land is actively used for cattle grazing and features multiple oil and gas well pads, which is a common land use in this region of Texas.
Porter Ranch Airport was a private airfield that served the agricultural and personal needs of the Porter Ranch. It featured a single, 3,200-foot unpaved turf runway (designated 17/35). Its primary operations would have involved light, single-engine aircraft (such as Cessna or Piper models) used for personal transportation, recreational flying, and ranch-related activities like property surveys, checking on livestock, or accessing remote parts of the large property. Its significance was purely private, providing convenient air access for the ranch's owners and associates.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Porter Ranch Airport. The land is privately owned and is now utilized for other economic purposes (agriculture and resource extraction). Given that it has been closed for over two decades and the infrastructure has been removed or has deteriorated completely, reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
