Circa 2014-2015. While an exact official date is not publicly available, the heliport's closure coincides with the major renovation and rebranding of the Lafayette Hilton and Towers to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Lafayette. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad markings were present on the hotel's roof until at least 2014 but were removed by 2015 after the roof was resurfaced.
Primarily a business and economic decision. The closure was likely driven by a combination of factors including: 1) Decreased demand for executive helicopter transport directly to the hotel, possibly due to fluctuations in the regional oil and gas industry. 2) The high costs associated with maintaining, insuring, and certifying a rooftop heliport. 3) The opportunity presented by the hotel's major renovation (c. 2014-2015) to decommission the facility and repurpose the valuable rooftop space for more essential building infrastructure, such as updated HVAC systems. There is no evidence of a specific accident or regulatory action forcing the closure.
The site of the former heliport is the main rooftop of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Lafayette, located at 1521 W Pinhook Rd, Lafayette, LA 70503. The helipad markings and any associated aviation equipment have been completely removed. The rooftop has been resurfaced and is now occupied by modern HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) units and other standard mechanical building equipment. The site is no longer an aviation facility in any capacity.
The Lafayette Hilton Heliport was a private facility (PPR - Prior Permission Required) located on the roof of what was then the premier business hotel in the city. Its primary function was to serve high-level executives, particularly from the booming oil and gas industry for which Lafayette is a major hub. The heliport offered a prestigious and efficient mode of transportation, allowing VIPs to travel directly between the hotel, corporate headquarters, and regional airports that served as staging points for offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Its existence symbolized the deep integration of Lafayette's economy with the energy sector during the 1980s and 1990s, providing a direct link for the industry's key decision-makers.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Reopening is considered extremely unlikely due to several factors: the significant capital investment required to clear the current infrastructure and recertify the facility to modern FAA standards; the likely continued lack of sufficient demand to justify the operational and insurance costs; and the general trend of increasing restrictions and public opposition to urban heliports due to noise and safety concerns. The space has been permanently repurposed.
