Approximately between 1999 and 2004. The airfield was still depicted on aeronautical charts in 1998 and the runway appeared clear in 1999 aerial imagery. By 2004, aerial photos show the runway had become significantly overgrown, indicating it had fallen into disuse.
The specific reason is not officially documented, which is common for small private airfields. The closure was most likely due to economic or personal reasons, such as the sale of the property, the owner no longer having a need for the strip, or the owner's death. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed for military conversion, a major accident, or regulatory action.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. The site, as seen in current satellite imagery, is completely overgrown with dense vegetation. The faint, straight-line outline of the former runway is still barely discernible from the air, but the ground is undeveloped and has reverted to a natural state. There are no remaining airport facilities or buildings, and the land is not used for any aviation purpose.
Cox's Hammock Airport was a small, private-use airfield. It was not present on charts in the late 1960s but appeared on the 1977 Miami Sectional Chart. It featured a single unpaved, north-south runway with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. Its operations were limited to light general aviation aircraft, presumably for the personal use of the property owner for recreation, personal transportation, or agricultural activities related to the surrounding rural land. It held no significant role in public or commercial aviation.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Given its complete state of disrepair, overgrown condition, and its history as a minor private strip, the likelihood of it ever being restored and reactivated as an airfield is virtually zero. The land will likely remain as undeveloped rural property or be used for agriculture or conservation.
